The engineering and construction (E&C) industry is at the cusp of a new era, with technology incumbents and start-ups creating new applications and tools that are changing how companies design, plan, and build projects. Leaders must make sense of an evolving ecosystem of tools and equip themselves for transformation. The opening webinar for AGC’s Construction Technology Innovation WebEd series will provide an overview of the technologies and trends shaping the industry, and will explore challenges and best practices for contractors looking to stay ahead of the technology curve.
Jose Luis Blanco Alvarez, Partner, McKinsey & Company
Jose leads McKinsey’s engineering and construction (E&C) work in North America, with a focus on real estate and construction technology. He advises capital project leaders across the project lifecycle, including investors, public sector institutions with large capital programs, and E&C or real estate project owners across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and North America.
Jose has served global E&C firms with a specialization in operational excellence, mergers and acquisitions, turnarounds, and digital transformations. He brings deep expertise in optimizing performance and unlocking value through embedding digital capabilities and deploying and scaling up new technologies.
Jose spearheads McKinsey’s global E&C performance benchmark, which periodically reviews the financial and operating health of the world’s top E&C firms. As a leader of our digital work in capital projects and infrastructure, he also leads McKinsey’s construction technology landscape scan, which periodically maps emerging construction technology solutions against innovation and investment patterns.
Before joining McKinsey, Jose spent almost 10 years at ACS, Europe’s largest E&C conglomerate, where he led hundreds of engineers and workers in completing some of the company’s most complex projects. This included transforming a former bullring into a shopping mall in 2009 and constructing Agbar Tower, one of Barcelona’s skyline landmarks, in 2006.
Zach Scheel,Co-Founder and CEO, Rhumbix
Zach Scheel is the co-founder and CEO of Rhumbix, a San Francisco-based startup helping builders go paperless in the field and improving how they measure and manage labor productivity. Zach has more than a decade of construction project management experience across three continents. After graduating from Duke University, Zach served for five years as a Civil Engineer Corps Officer in the US Navy. His billets include serving as the Resident Officer in Charge of Construction and Assistant Public Works Officer at Naval Station Everett, WA, and Military Construction Manager at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. After his military service, Zach worked as an Associate at Bechtel Enterprises, Assistant Superintendent at Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, and as a Project Controls Engineer at Organic Growth Project One, located in the Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. Zach holds two master’s degrees from Stanford University in business and construction, is a registered professional engineer in the state of California, and a LEED Accredited Professional (BD+C). Zach serves as a Cause Ambassador to the Movember Foundation and is actively involved in numerous Veteran-related charities.

In this webinar Josh Bone and Tony Nicolaidis along with Taylor Cupp of Mortenson will discuss the value of a connected jobsite. Today’s jobsites are changing and more digital information is being leveraged to improve communication across all project participants to reduce the risk of errors and omissions in our traditional processes. We will explore case studies that were produced from actual projects highlighting the importance of real-time access to the most current project documents. We will also discuss apps, software, hardware and other digital tools that require connectivity to optimize their use. Josh Bone, Construction Technology Specialist, Dewalt
Having worked with some of the top technology leaders in the industry, Josh specializes in identifying best practices and methodologies for integrating BIM and mobile applications into everyday workflows. Josh started his career working with design teams, then transitioned into helping construction professionals leverage technology in both the preconstruction and construction phases. Josh has served as manager, director and VP of consulting and business development at companies like Design Integrations, Inc., Graphisoft and SmartUse. His most notable projects include the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases headquarters, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention Laboratory Building 23, and Fort Sam Houston facilities for the U.S. Army. These projects involved planning and modeling for 500,000 to over 1,000,000 square feet of space.
Skilled in emerging software/application options forming the future of BIM, Josh is a proven leader in the best practices and methodology for integrating technology into everyday workflows for the AEC community.
Starting with (3D) coordination to generating (4D) schedules and (5D) quantities from models, Josh has delved deep into the BIM process. In addition, he’s had the opportunity to share this knowledge with audiences and publications across the U.S. as a frequent professional speaker and guest editorial contributor.
Tony Nicolaidis, Vice President of Marketing, Dewalt
Tony Nicolaidis is a 24-year veteran of DEWALT. In his tenure, he has led both product development and commercial teams.
Tony is passionate about offering solutions to construction contractors that maximize their productivity. He strongly feels that the future of construction lies in the adoption of digital solutions. He leads the Connected Systems team at DEWALT which focuses on both software and hardware solutions built for the construction industry.
Tony has an BSEE degree from the University of Maryland and an MBA from Loyola University.
Taylor Cupp, Technologist, M. A. Mortenson Company
Taylor Cupp is recognized as an emerging technology expert in the architecture, engineering and construction fields. As a Technologist with Mortenson, Taylor is primarily responsible for leading the company’s efforts to leverage the latest technology, such as virtual reality (VR) in order benefit customers – both today and into the future. Taylor also oversees efforts to reduce the time and cost of construction through the implementation of advanced technology including IoT, sensors, virtual prototypes, BIM in the Field, prefabrication, and Facilities Management Modeling.
From his time as architect and now with Mortenson, Taylor has worked on many complex projects in his career. Most recently, he led the technology team at the $500M Sanford Fargo Medical Center. He is currently playing a key role in field testing revolutionary new technologies like DEWALT’s Connected Systems Technology Platform and the new DAQRI Smart Helmet augmented reality (AR) solution, among other innovative approaches.
In addition, Taylor is embedded in Mortenson’s Last 100’® initiative, leading the charge in implementing Building Information Models (BIM) from the start of building design and construction all the way into facility management and operating processes.

The reality of design validation, 3D coordination, and building of the built environment is in a state of disconnection. We live in a constant 1:1 human scale in real reality and yet design and coordinate in scaled 2D drawings and 3D BIM models. How does the aging AEC industry bridge the tribal knowledge gap with processes of construction that take years to learn?
Virtual and augmented reality are new technologies that are advancing at an incredible pace and have promise to improve workflow. In today’s construction economy there is higher demand for construction workforce but a supply of less skilled labor which cannot fulfill the demand. Virtual and augmented reality can bridge the tribal knowledge gap allowing experienced generations to easily transfer knowledge to younger generations, thus ramping up the skills of the workforce via technology. The reality is construction needs a disruption.
Cody Nowak, Founder, DisruptAEC
Cody Nowak has experience in the AEC industry coordinating projects with architects, MEP engineers, general contractors, and a variety of subcontractors. As a technology evangelist, Mr. Nowak is bridging the gap between technology, BIM, and AEC with the purpose of integrating virtual reality and augmented reality into a prominent role. He is working on progressing the AEC industry towards the integration of real-time 3D engines to be used for powering real-time collaboration and ultimately the use of real-time BIM in the field via emerging hardware technologies. His innovative efforts were recognized by ENR Magazine, which honored him as an “ENR Top 25 Newsmaker 2016” and at Bluebeam eXtreme 2016 with “The Trailblazer” award. Josh Kanner is Founder & CEO of Smartvid.io. Most recently he was co-founder of Vela Systems, a pioneer in the use of web and tablet workflows for construction and capital projects. The company was successfully acquired by Autodesk in 2012 and has been rebranded as BIM360 Field. Prior to founding Vela Systems, Josh was responsible for product management and strategy at Emptoris (now part of IBM), a web-based strategic sourcing software company. Kanner graduated from Brown University and earned an MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. He enjoys hiking, skiing, travel and being a dad to his two boys.
